the English steamer Mary Ann (blockade runner), fourteen hours from Wilmington, N. C., bound to Nassau, New Providence.

The steamer was reported insight from the masthead at 6:40 a. in., bearing W. S. W., and immediately we stood in chase. At 10:10 a. after the third shot from our 100-pounder Parrott gun, the stranger turned around and surrendered, in longitude 780 11 45 W., latitude 320 21 N. There was no other vessel in sight at any time during the (5hase, nor at any time to-day. The Mary Ann is an iron side-wheel steamer of 235 tons (gross), Eng. lish, and superior in some respects, I think, to the Banshee. Her cargo consisted principally of 354 bales of cotton and about 65 boxes and 2 drums of tobacco: but in the chase she hove overboard about 100 bales of the cotton, as nearly as could be estimated. She did not show any colors at any time, from the commencement of the chase to the time she was surrendered as a prize. I enclose herewith a certificate of her registry, which was picked up from the sea. I have sent the Mary Ann to Boston, Mass., in charge of Lieutenant Frederick Rodgers, with an acting third assistant engineer, an acting masters mate, and a prize crew, consisting of 14 men; leaving on board of her also her captain, first mate, and chief engineer. But I instructed Lieutenant Rodgers to touch at Beaufort, N. C., and obtain there a sufficient supply of coal. She had on board a large number of passengers, of whom, together with her crew, I have received, on board of this vessel, 64. I respect- fully ask your instruction regarding the disposition to be made of them. The highest speed attained by this vessel in the chase was 11~ knots, against a fresh breeze and a moderate head.sea, and her average speed was 10~ knots. I enclose herewith, also, lists, in duplicate, of the officers and crew of this vessel who are entitled to share in whatever may accrue of prize money from this capture. U. S. S. GRAND GULF, Beaufort, N. C., March 9, 1864.

SIR: I have the honor to report that on the 7th instant I succeeded in picking up from the sea 16 bales and a quantity of loose cotton which had been thrown overboard by the prize steamer Mary Ann in the chase of the 6th instant. I have to state also that eight table forks and a fish knife (supposed to be silver) were found in the possession of one of the prisonars, which he acknowledged to have taken from the cabin of the Mary Ann; also a marine opera glass, belonging to the prize, was found in the posses- sion of another prisoner.
